Tell me more: In the early 1970s Pentax switched from the M42 mount to a new range of K mount cameras. The KM (along with the KX and K2) was one of them. Like a lot of cameras from this period, the construction is superb and it is ultra reliable. A few years later Pentax released a stripped down version of this camera, the K1000. It was sold at a cheaper price and so became popular amongst photography students for many years after. As a result this K1000 has a bit of an iconic status which pushes the price of them to silly levels. The result - you can buy this KM for less than a K1000 AND get a superior camera.
